Farm history
Every place has found a different answer. That is the idea this page is built around.
I breathed two seasons in the Emerald Triangle and visited many experienced farms, most of them in the Emerald Triangle and Northern California. No two of them do it the same way. Sol Spirit Farm gets through an entire season on a jacket pocket full of inputs, at Heartrock Mountain potatoes and cannabis grow on the same slope, Woodwide runs over a hundred cultivars indoors, in perfection. All three work.
What separates them is not skill, it is location. An operation on the coast has different means than one in a dry valley, and anyone who ignores that works against the place instead of with it.
So this is not a list of stations, but of systems.
Work stations and own practice
Cannabis Social Club CAGH1 e.V.Hannover, Germany
I joined when the first walls were going up in an empty hall. Back then we were a handful of people, by now there are 200 members. Volunteer work at first, today Senior Grower and involved across the whole production chain.
What gives me the most are the trim sessions. New members are introduced there, and with others you pick up a conversation that started the last time.
Sunrise GardensMendocino County, California
Henry Wieker, my boss at the association at the time, pointed me to this farm. A one-man operation under Frank Wilker, Emerald Cup winner 2023. Two seasons: 2025 through flower, harvest and post-harvest, 2026 from bed preparation and transplant through to irrigation.
Red clay soil, coastal fog most mornings, wide temperature swings between day and night, five months of sun with nothing to filter it. Off-grid, the water comes from the well on the property.
The first hour of the day often went to nothing but looking. No tool in hand, just walking the rows. That was not a break, it was the most important part.
Farm visits and exchange
Heartrock Mountain FarmPotter Valley, California
Remote and overgrown, and that is exactly the point. In a permaculture like this one, wild growth is not neglect, it is part of the system.
Daniel Morford runs the farm in the third generation. Potatoes, fruit trees and cannabis grow on the same slope, not in separate zones. The same mountain, worked for three generations.
The founder, Farmopa by now, listens to Alan Watts. Same as me.
Sol Spirit FarmTrinity County, California
Walter Wood grows a complete season on under 60 dollars of purchased inputs. Salt, olive oil, lye, sulphur. Everything he buys fits in a jacket pocket.
The rest comes from the land. JADAM ferments, compost, bay laurel from the slopes behind the house, worm castings from his own production. Off-grid since 2001, the same soil for over twenty years.
What stayed with me was not the number, but the question behind it. How little do you actually need, and how much of it is already lying outside the door.

MalamatherootsMendocino County, California
Neighbour of Sunrise Gardens, which is why I was there more often and worked along as well.
The founder comes from Hawaii and brings the matching calm with him onto the farm. Nothing feels driven, even though there is just as much to do as anywhere else.
Happy Day FarmsMendocino County, California
A small operation with under ten people, but a range of flowers, fruit and vegetables you would not expect at that size. The reason is the farmers market they stand at every week. Selling weekly means having something to offer weekly.
Work goes on around the clock there, without looking like pressure. That kind of inner motivation is immediately noticeable on the farm.
Off Grid FarmMendocino County, California
A large, largely self-sufficient farm. Chickens, ducks, geese, dogs and cannabis on the same land, all of it without a connection to any grid.
What stayed with me most were not the beds, but the children growing up there. You do not get that kind of joy on a property that is only production area.
WoodwideIndoor, California
An extremely professional facility with four employees running over a hundred cultivars.
A hundred cultivars mean a hundred different needs in one room. That it works is not down to the technology, it is down to the documentation. Anyone running that many lines at once cannot keep it in their head, they have to write it down.
Purple City GeneticsOakland, California
Two days after first arriving in San Francisco we visited Aurtyn, the owner, at his clone facility. What stood out most was the archive, with some very rare specimens.
The contact has lasted. At trade shows like Mary Jane you will regularly find me at their booth, with the European team around Anna and two guys my age.
Humboldt Seed CompanyHumboldt County, California
Probably the best known list on the farm. Jonas, who now lives there with his girlfriend, invited me over for an evening when I was back in the Triangle in 2026.
We had met the year before at Frank's farm. With the Nepal expedition that has since turned into the next step.
Greyshock FarmMendocino County, California
Mark is hard to reach digitally. We met at local events, and the visit to his farm came out of that.
He lives secluded and runs his award winning farm with a small team. What stands out immediately is how he meets people. Respect and support, without having to ask for it.
On the farm there was a strawberry pheno he had bred over the winter in an outdoor bed. A remarkable achievement, above all because of the result: a strawberry aroma so sharp and defined that it almost seemed artificial.
MartyjuanaEmerald Triangle, California
A small, remote farm, comfortable and in great landscape.
We spent a day with the nephew, who was WWOOFing there as well. Two people from different countries on the same farm, there for the same reason.
Kandid KushStudio, California
Chris is one of the photographers in the Triangle. During harvest season he is booked solid, all the better that we could spend an evening together in April 2026.
A short while later I invited him to Mary Jane, a week sharing accommodation. Hectic, as Mary Jane always is, but a good time with many acquaintances that came about through him.
Trade shows and appearances
Mary Jane Berlin 2026Berlin, June 2026
Besides the speaker slot with Lorenz, above all a reunion. Many international friends from the Triangle were there. A trade show where you keep running into each other.
Education and certifications
B.Sc. Business Economics, ongoing
Leibniz University Hannover
Business administration, cost accounting, organisation. A growing system has to work not only biologically but also on paper, and in a market under price pressure it is often the cost side that decides whether an operation stays.
Global Budtender
Oaksterdam University, June 2026
Product knowledge, advice and compliance at the interface to the consumer. Relevant to the question of how knowledge about cultivation and genetics arrives where the handover happens.

Expeditions
Nepal Heritage Landrace Expedition
October and November 2026
Four weeks through several regions, partly into valleys in the west of the country. The work documents traditional cannabis populations, charas culture and the communities that have carried both for generations.
Latin America
2027, in planning
Continuation of the landrace documentation on another continent.
